Two lakes with one name
The south end is wide, shallow and Mediterranean: Sirmione on its long spit of rock, Desenzano and Peschiera on the flat shore, Bardolino and the town of Garda looking back across the water at the mountains. This is where the vineyards start at the water’s edge and the boats potter. The north end is a different country — the lake narrows into a trench between cliffs, the villages cling to the shore, and the wind arrives twice a day like a timetable.
Which end you are staying on changes almost everything about the week, so it is the first thing worth telling us. The south basin is markedly calmer than the north, which is why families gravitate there and why sailors do not.
Boats, and where they go from
Every town on the lake has its own harbour and its own boats. From Sirmione the standard runs are the peninsula circuit at 25 to 30 minutes, the round trip out to Isola del Garda at about 2 hours, the same with Gardone Riviera added at about 3 hours, and a full-lake day at 8 hours. Desenzano and Bardolino work the same water from the other side. Salò sits in its own deep bay on the Brescia shore, and Riva del Garda in the north sends short, dramatic runs to the Ponale waterfall in 30 minutes and to Limone in about an hour.
Then there is the water taxi, which is a category of its own here: a boat used as transport between towns rather than as a tour, priced per person on set routes or per boat privately. It is how you get to a restaurant across the bay, or off the peninsula after dinner.
Wine, oil and the table
Lugana is grown on the low ground behind Sirmione and Desenzano, and its flagship estate sits at Lugana di Sirmione itself. Bardolino comes from the hills immediately behind the eastern shore, minutes from the water. Valpolicella — Amarone country — is inland towards Verona, close enough that the day trip out of Garda is a standard thing here. And the lake makes Garda DOP olive oil in mills that press from mid-October to mid-December and run visits year-round.
For eating, the choice is a cooking class in someone’s kitchen or a cook in your own: classes here are small and hands-on, and in-villa dining is offered for parties from two to twenty.
Arriving
Three airports serve the lake and they are genuinely different distances. Verona is the close one at about 32 km and half an hour to Sirmione; Bergamo is about 79 km and about 50 minutes to Desenzano; Milan Malpensa is about 160 km and about 2 hours to the southern shore, and 2 to 3 hours to the farther ones. Private cars here run under Italy’s NCC regime, which is pre-booked only — there is no hailing one at the kerb.
When to come, and the wind
The season runs April to October, and the hard edges of it are visible in the way the lake trades: the licence-free rental season is 1 April to 31 October, the main ferry timetable runs 16 May to 4 October with the Desenzano-Sirmione-Riva line from March, and Isola del Garda opens from late March and closes on Mondays.
The wind deserves its own paragraph because it decides your morning. The Peler blows from the north roughly 07:00 to noon at 10 to 25 knots, then the Ora turns and blows from the south through the afternoon at 15 to 25 knots at Torbole. That is a gift if you sail and a consideration if you have small children in an open boat. Summer afternoons can also throw a thunderstorm, and when a day cannot run safely, the skipper or host makes that call — the norm on the lake is free cancellation 24 to 48 hours ahead and a refund or a reschedule when the weather calls it off.
