Two harbours, one gulf
Salò has two working harbours for boats: Porto Sirena and Porto Barbarano. Between them sits the long lakefront promenade, and in front of them the Gulf of Salò — a deep, sheltered bay on the Brescia shore that faces east into the morning sun.
The two local companies do different jobs. One at Porto Barbarano works lake-wide and is the official transport partner for Isola del Garda; the other at Porto Sirena is a taxi-boat operation with a published set of tours. Neither of them is us: we plan and confirm the day, they run the boat and make every call on the water. Their skippers are professional captains.
What you can actually book
The published range from Salò is 30 minutes to 4 hours, plus restaurant runs across the gulf. That last one is the local speciality and the thing most worth knowing: a boat takes you to dinner on the far shore and brings you home in the dark, which is a better evening than any drive around the lake.
Longer days exist too — a full-lake day out of the southern basin is 8 hours — and from Sirmione the standard three-hour tour takes in Isola del Garda and Gardone Riviera, which tells you how close everything here is to everything else.
The island, from the closest port
Isola del Garda is served from eight embarkation ports, with crossings of 10 to 60 minutes depending which one you use. Salò and San Felice del Benaco are the near ones. Two rules the estate sets, not us: visits are booked online at least the day before and never by phone, and the 2026 season runs 29 March into October with Mondays closed. The visit is priced including the boat, by distance tier — adults 39 to 49 EUR, reduced 35 to 45 EUR, children 5 to 12 at 23 to 33 EUR.
Prices, and how we quote
Salò’s own tours are quoted per boat and per date. As benchmarks from either side of the lake: Sirmione publishes 100 EUR for a 25-minute run up to 1,300 EUR for a full 8-hour day, and Desenzano publishes 200 to 600 EUR per tour. We ask the boats that are genuinely free on your date and send you their numbers with the inclusions written out.
Season, water and cancellation
April to October. The southern half of the lake is markedly calmer than the north, with the wind turning from northerly to southerly around the middle of the day and thunderstorms possible on summer afternoons. Life jackets are standard on commercial boats. If the weather makes a trip unsafe the skipper calls it off, and the lake norm is free cancellation 24 to 48 hours ahead with a refund or a reschedule.
