One island, two coasts, and a wind that decides
Menorca is small enough to cross in under an hour and contrary enough that the crossing changes everything. The north is wind-carved, dark-rocked and half empty. The south is pale sand, pine shade and water that goes turquoise the moment the sun is up. Which one you get on a given morning is decided by the Tramuntana, and the island’s skippers say so openly — routes adapted daily to wind and sea, north or south depending on the weather. A boat selling a fixed itinerary here is either new or not being straight with you.
The island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, and the northern coast holds a marine reserve that the Fornells sailing routes cross. That is not a marketing badge; it is why the north coast still looks the way it does.
Where the boats actually leave from
Four bases, and they are not interchangeable. The Port of Maó — commonly described as the largest natural harbour in the Mediterranean, running nearly 6 km inland — has the island’s charter row along the Moll de Llevant quay, and the deepest choice of boats on the island. Ciutadella’s Old Port sends the big south-coast excursion boats out to the famous calas. Fornells, on the north coast, is where the catamarans and sailing boats work the reserve. And Cala Galdana runs a beach departure — meeting point at the taxi rank, fifteen minutes early — straight onto the south-coast beaches you would otherwise queue for by road.
What things honestly cost
Nothing here is priced by us; we send you the rate the local business charges for your dates, with what it includes spelled out. As planning anchors: shared south-coast days run roughly €35 to €90 per person, shared north-coast catamaran trips about €45 to €65, and a private llaüt somewhere between €400 and €1,350 depending on hours and season. Sunsets taken privately start around €300. Guided rides on the coastal path sit between about €40 and €115, and the cheese-estate visits between about €14 and €25. Private chefs are quoted per menu and party size, with no published rate anywhere on the island.
The llaüt is the local answer
Most islands sell you a yacht. Menorca sells you a llaüt: the traditional wooden-hulled boat, shaded, unhurried, built for anchoring rather than arriving. At least six businesses run llaüt charters with their own published programmes, from Maó, Es Canutells, Cala Galdana, Fornells and Ciutadella, carrying between 7 and 12 guests. It is the one boat day here that people describe afterwards without mentioning the boat.
Off the water
The Camí de Cavalls, the waymarked GR-223, circles the island in twenty stages under the Consell Insular’s care — and the honest way to see a piece of it is on a horse, which is what it was built for. Inland, Mahón-Menorca cheese carries a protected designation of origin recognised in 1985, and three estates carry the island’s wine tourism between them. Off-road jeep days reach the beaches the tarmac does not.
Who actually runs your day
We own no boats, no jeeps and no kitchens. Skippered charter is the default product here, and taking a boat out yourself requires a recognised qualification. Booked private transfers run under VTC private-hire licences, and island taxis are municipally licensed with a hard four-passenger cap. One honest note: Balearic charter businesses do not publish registry numbers the way Portuguese ones do, so we verify charter registration directly with each business rather than quoting a number from a website.
When to come
Peak is May to October, though the charter seasons are tighter than the calendar and the real high band falls between late June and early September. Cheese and wine visits are the genuine year-round option. One date stands alone: a total solar eclipse falls on 12 August 2026 and the island is already selling for it. Cancellation terms are set boat by boat and vary a lot, from free cancellation 48 hours out to sliding scales that start a month ahead — we get yours in writing before anything is paid.
