The port, and what it is good for
Desenzano’s boats work out of the old port at Piazza Ulisse Papa, right in the middle of town — which means you walk from lunch to the pontoon rather than driving to a marina outside somewhere. It is the practical corner of the lake: the station is here, the road from Milan and Brescia arrives here, and the water in front of it is wide, open and usually calm.
From here the lake opens west towards Salò and east towards Sirmione, with Isola del Garda more or less straight ahead. Nearly every request we get from this port is one of three days: the island, Sirmione from the water, or an afternoon that ends with the sun going down over the Brescia shore.
Prices you can actually check
Desenzano is unusually straightforward. The tours here are published at 200 to 600 EUR for the boat, with a sunset tour at 250 EUR, the Isola del Garda tour at 400 EUR and a four-hour tour at 600 EUR. Those boats take 8 to 9 people, so a four-hour afternoon for eight lands somewhere most groups find reasonable once it is divided up.
For comparison, across the water at Sirmione the published range runs from 100 EUR for a 25-minute peninsula circuit to 1,300 EUR for a full 8-hour day, and one company there charges a flat 180 EUR per hour. We quote you whatever the boat that is genuinely free on your date actually charges, with the inclusions written out.
The island, and Sirmione from the water
Isola del Garda is reachable from eight ports including Desenzano, with crossings of 10 to 60 minutes depending on where you start. Be aware that the island is a private estate: visits are booked online at least the day before and never by phone, and the 2026 season runs 29 March into October with Mondays closed. If the island is the reason for your boat, we book both halves together.
Sirmione is the other classic. The scheduled ferry across takes about 20 to 30 minutes; a private boat can arrive at the castle, wait while you eat, and bring you home — which quietly solves the parking problem that anyone who has driven into Sirmione in August will recognise.
Who runs the boats, and the self-drive option
The Desenzano boats are run by an independent local company working from the old port, with skippered tours as well as rental, and a site in Italian, English, German and Dutch. Commercial skippers on this lake are professional captains. We arrange and confirm; they run the boat.
Self-drive is a genuine alternative here. Boats under 40 hp can be taken out on ID alone, and the rental fleet is built to that limit; those boats seat 5 to 7 people and rent at 100 to 330 EUR per hour including fuel on the eastern shore, with day rates across the lake clustering at 130 to 280 EUR. Tell us which you want, because they are different bookings with different rules — on the water, motorboats keep 300 m off the shore, with 20 knots by day, 5 at night and 3 in port.
Season and weather
April to October, with the licence-free rental season running 1 April to 31 October as a good marker for when the lake is properly awake. The south basin is markedly calmer than the north, though the wind still turns twice a day and summer afternoons can bring a storm. Weather calls belong to the skipper; the lake norm is free cancellation 24 to 48 hours ahead with a refund or reschedule when a day cannot run.
