One island, two working harbours and a mountain in the middle
Almost everything at sea leaves from one of two places. Marina do Funchal and the Praça do Povo quay at Cais 8 is the busy one — the whale-watching catamarans, the sailing boats and the Desertas day trips all go from there — with the brokerage berths at Marina Nova do Funchal handling the yacht charter end. Forty minutes west, Porto de Recreio da Calheta is the quieter second base: the Calheta whale boats and the entire big-game fishing fleet work from there.
Inland the island goes vertical. The laurel forest, the levada channels and the Pico do Arieiro ridge are a different holiday from the marina, and the weather is different too: the south coast around Funchal, Calheta and Ponta do Sol is the sheltered, sunnier side, while the north and the highlands are wetter, especially from October to March.

Private yacht charter starts near €250 a day for a small boat and moves to quote-only once a crew is involved, and airport transfers run about €23 to €30 to Funchal, €45 to €59 to Calheta and €43 to €55 to Ponta do Sol.
Whales, described accurately
This is the island’s strongest draw and the one most often oversold. More than 25 cetacean species have been recorded here across the year, with resident bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales and migratory species that change month to month — so the honest answer to “which month” is that there is no closed season, not that any given animal is guaranteed. Boats work to a code of conduct: a minimum of 50 m from cetaceans, speed limits inside 300 m, a cap on how many boats may approach and how long they may stay, and radio coordination between them, with IFCN overseeing compliance. One Funchal business backs its trips with a sighting guarantee — no cetaceans, free repeat trip.
Walking changed in 2026
If you last came before this year, the rules are new. The PR trail network is now ticketed and time-slotted through the regional portal: €4.50 per person per route, €10.50 for the Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo traverse, under-12s free, and fines for walking without a ticket. Paid guiding requires a registered company or guide, and the island has been enforcing that. In practice this is why the guided walk has quietly become the easier option — the permit, the slot and the transfer are somebody else’s problem.
Who actually runs your day
We do not own boats, jeeps or kitchens. Tourist-activity companies in Portugal must hold an RNAAT registration and display it, and Madeira’s tourism board keeps a public directory of them.
