The beaches are the argument
Son Saura, Es Talaier, Cala en Turqueta, Macarella, Macarelleta: the south-west calas are the reason people book flights to this island, and they are also the reason people spend a morning in a car park. By sea they arrive in the right order, at the right time of day, with a ladder off the back of the boat instead of a twenty-minute walk through pine.
The big excursion boats leave from the Old Port of Ciutadella, along Passeig des Moll, where a south-coast excursion company sits at number 34 and a maritime excursion business has been working the same quay for more than 40 years. Further east, Cala Galdana runs beach departures with the meeting point at the taxi rank next to the bar, fifteen minutes before the boat.
The shape of the day
The full day is generous and fixed: roughly 09:30 or 09:45 to 17:00, with about 2 hours anchored at Cala en Turqueta and about 1.5 hours at Son Saura, and half-day versions of about 4 hours, morning or afternoon. Lunch on the full day is normally aboard and included. From Cala Galdana the llaüt runs a 3.5-hour trip and a 7-hour full day instead.
That difference matters more than the price does. A big boat with paella aboard is a sociable, generous, slightly noisy day. A semi-private llaüt is twelve people, shade and quiet. Both are good; they are not the same afternoon.
What it costs, honestly
Shared south-coast days run roughly €35 to €90 per person: about €35 for a half day and about €45 for a full day with paella and sangria on the big Ciutadella boats, up to about €80 to €90 per person for the semi-private 3.5-hour llaüt trip from Cala Galdana. Taking the llaüt exclusively runs about €840 to €1,080 for 3.5 hours or €1,680 to €2,160 for the full day. Children are priced by age band rather than free.
Wind, season and the honest caveat
The south coast is the sheltered side, which is exactly why boats head this way when the Tramuntana is up — skippers here are open about running north or south depending on the weather and adapting routes daily. It still means your anchorages are chosen on the morning rather than promised in advance.
Peak is May to October, with the genuine high band from late June to early September and cheaper shoulder weeks either side. One date to plan around: the total solar eclipse of 12 August 2026, for which a Ciutadella boat is selling a sailing at about €120.
Who runs it
Licensed local businesses run every boat; we arrange the day, confirm it directly and stay your contact. Registration is verified with each business rather than quoted from a website, because Balearic operators do not publish registry numbers. Cancellation terms are per boat, from free cancellation 48 hours ahead to sliding scales that start a month out, with weather cancellations normally refunding the deposit in full.
