The longest run on the island
Ciutadella is at the far end of Menorca from the airport, which makes this the island’s main transfer route. It is about 47 km along the Me-1, and the honest published range is 40 to 60 minutes — a driving guide says about 40, a transfer company allows about 60. We publish the range rather than pick the flattering number.
It is an easy road and a dull one, which is the point: you land, you get in, and the holiday starts at the old port rather than at a car hire desk.
Taxi, bus or a booked car
People compare all three before they arrive — the searching for this route returns bus, taxi, taxi cost, shuttle, transfer and distance in the same breath, and public transport is the genuine price competitor on this corridor. So here is the honest comparison.
The official island taxi tariff is published: about €57 by day and €69 at night to Ciutadella, plus an airport surcharge of about €3 and roughly €0.60 per item of luggage. A booked private transfer for a group of six is listed from about €118. For a couple travelling light, the rank is fine. For a family with cases, the booked car is usually both cheaper per head and considerably less trouble.
There is one hard rule that settles most of these conversations: Menorca taxis may not legally carry more than 4 passengers, and any child counts as one of the four, while booked transfer fleets run everything from cars up to coaches of 59 seats. A family of five cannot use a taxi here at all.
Child seats, properly
Island taxis do not carry child seats — parents are expected to bring and fit their own — while booked private transfer companies do advertise them, and Spanish law requires restraints for younger children. It is also one of the things people search for by name when they book a Menorca transfer, which tells you how often it goes wrong. Send ages and weights with your request and the seats are in the car before you land.
