The marina with the shortest run to the good coast
Marina de Portimão sits on Avenida Rio Arade next to Praia da Rocha, at the mouth of the river — the closest big marina to the Benagil coast. That single fact decides most of what follows. The cave run from here is about 1.5 hours round trip by speedboat, where the same destination from Vilamoura needs a 4 to 5 hour charter. If your day is about the cliffs, this is the efficient place to start it.
The coastline immediately east is the best of the Algarve: arches, collapsed grottoes, coves with no road to them, and water that goes turquoise over sand. A private boat lets you stop where the shared fleet cannot.
The other direction: up the river
Portimão is the only base on this coast that also runs inland. An electro-solar catamaran works the Arade river up toward Silves as well as the sea coast — flat water, birds, a castle on the hill, and no swell whatsoever. For a group that has already done the caves, or one that includes someone who does not love open water, it is the better second day.
What it costs, honestly
Private yachts here start from about €368 for a 12-passenger sail yacht and from about €474 for a private yacht run to Benagil. A shared 1.5-hour coastline cruise is about €32 per person, and shared cave tours across the coast sit at roughly €19 to €45 per person. Bigger boats and longer blocks are quoted per boat and per date rather than published. What we send is the boat’s own number for your dates, with inclusions itemised.
Boats and numbers
Private yachts on this coast take roughly 8 to 19 guests. The shared fleet at this marina includes an electro-solar catamaran carrying up to 30 passengers with a 10-passenger sister boat, and a larger vessel rated for up to 45 passengers. Cave-capable boats are small, around ten people or fewer — worth knowing before you picture a yacht slipping inside a grotto.
Season and weather
Peak is May to October. The operational constraint on this stretch is Atlantic swell rather than wind: calm at the beach can still mean dangerous water at the cave mouth. Mornings are steadier than afternoons through most of the season, and early departures also beat the excursion fleet to the cliffs.
How we arrange it
Boats are run by Portuguese maritime-tourism businesses registered with Turismo de Portugal under RNAAT; one multi-marina business also works from Albufeira, Vilamoura and Lagos. We arrange and confirm the day and stay your single point of contact; the skipper runs the boat and makes the calls on the water. Free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead is the market norm, with weather cancellations normally resolving as a reschedule or refund on the boat’s terms, in writing first.
