The shortest run on the coast

Marina de Portimão sits at the mouth of the Arade river next to Praia da Rocha and is the closest big marina to the Benagil coast. The cave run from here is about 1.5 hours round trip by speedboat; add a dolphin search and it stretches to around 2.5 hours. Compare that with a 4 to 5 hour charter from Vilamoura for the same destination and the logic of leaving from here is obvious.

What you actually get is a coastline, not a single cave. Between Portimão and Benagil the cliffs are stacked with arches, blowholes and collapsed grottoes, most of them unnamed and none of them queued for. The famous doorway is one moment in that; the good skippers treat it that way.

What the rules allow now

Benagil is regulated water. Harbourmaster edicts in force since 13 August 2024 and amended in July 2025 ban swimming or flotation access, ban disembarking on the cave beach, restrict entry to licensed vessels, cap the number of boats inside at once and limit the time each spends there; kayaks and paddleboards may only approach guide-led, at roughly one guide per six craft. In practice a licensed boat gets roughly 5 to 10 minutes inside. Fines for breaches run from €200 to €216,000.

These rules exist because people died here. We would rather write that plainly than sell a picture of a picnic on a beach you are not allowed to stand on.

What it costs, honestly

Speedboat runs from Portimão start from about €19 per person. A 1.5-hour coastline cruise is around €32 per person, and the 2.5-hour dolphin-and-cave version around €45 per person. Private boats to Benagil start from about €474, with a 12-passenger sail yacht from about €368. Across the coast, shared cave tours sit in a €19 to €45 per person band.

Choosing the boat

Cave-capable boats are small — around ten people or fewer. The shared fleet here also includes an electro-solar catamaran taking up to 30 passengers with a 10-passenger sister boat and a larger vessel rated for up to 45 passengers. Bigger means steadier and shadier and further from the cave mouth. We say which trade you are making before you book, not after.

Season and swell

Peak is May to October. The constraint is Atlantic swell rather than wind, and the dangerous gap is that it can look calm at the beach while the cave mouth is unworkable. Early departures are calmer and quieter; midday in August is neither.

Trips are run by Portuguese maritime-tourism businesses registered with Turismo de Portugal under RNAAT — we arrange and confirm, they run the boat and make every call on the water. How long does the trip take?
About an hour and a half round trip by speedboat from Marina de Portimão. Add a dolphin search and it becomes roughly two and a half hours. That makes it the shortest cave run on the coast, and the reason Portimão is the sensible departure point if the cave is the priority.

Can we land on the beach inside the cave?
No. Since August 2024 the harbourmaster rules ban disembarking on the cave beach and ban swimming or floating in, restrict entry to licensed boats and cap both boat numbers and time inside. Kayaks and paddleboards may only approach guide-led. The rules came after deaths on this stretch, and they are enforced with real fines.
Speedboat, catamaran or kayak?
Speedboats are fast, small and can work the cave mouths. Catamarans are steadier and shadier and view from further out — better with children or in heat. Kayaks get closest of all but only guide-led, and only in the right conditions. We match the boat to your group rather than to the photo you saw.
What if the swell is up?
The trip is cut short, re-routed or cancelled. Atlantic swell can look harmless from Praia da Rocha and be dangerous at the cave mouth — that gap is exactly what catches visitors out. A skipper who says no on those mornings is doing their job.
