Why Vilamoura is the fishing base
Marina de Vilamoura is the charter base of the central Algarve, with offices on the marina itself and several dedicated firms working from it. For fishing that concentration matters: boats leave early, come back to the same pontoon, and the skippers talk to each other about what is holding where. The dedicated fishing base here is registered under RNAAT 18/2020 and runs big-game, shark and reef trips with rods, reels, bait and tackle included.
The three trips, and who each suits
Reef fishing is the half-day, accessible version: ground within reach of the marina, steady action, suitable for mixed-ability groups and often for older children. Big game is a full day offshore trolling for the pelagic species this coast is known for — a long day, a real cost, and no promises. Shark trips are their own thing again, usually catch-and-release and run by skippers who take that part seriously.
If your group is split between people who want to fish and people who want to swim, say so early. It is usually better solved with two different days than one compromised boat.
What it costs, honestly
Reef fishing trips on this coast start from about €75 per person, with gear included on licensed boats. A marketplace destination page for Vilamoura listed charters “from US $88” in its 2025 edition — read that as a shared trip floor, not a private-boat rate. Big-game and private charters are quoted per boat and per date rather than published, which is normal here and the reason a single headline number online rarely survives contact with your actual dates.
Season and conditions
Peak season on this coast is May to October, and the offshore fishing calendar has its own rhythm within that — species move through, and a good skipper will tell you if your week is the wrong one for what you want to target. Weather matters more here than on a coastal cruise: swell that a cliff tour can shrug off makes a day offshore miserable and unproductive.
