The best coastline-to-pontoon ratio on this coast
Lagos, at the western end of the Algarve, has the shortest gap between marina and scenery of anywhere in the region. Boat trips leave from Marina de Lagos, where the boat-trip gate sits opposite Amuras Bar; one fleet works from São Roque with twelve vessels, and traditional two-masted sailing boats have run from here since 1980. Within minutes of leaving you are under the sandstone stacks and grottoes of Ponta da Piedade.

What a day from Lagos looks like
The grotto circuit at Ponta da Piedade is about 1 hour 15 minutes round trip, so it works as a short evening run or as the opening of a longer day. Benagil is about 2 hours round trip — comfortably a half-day charter with swim stops on the way back. Longer private days push west toward the Sagres end, which is wilder, emptier and considerably more weather-dependent.
What it costs, honestly
Private boats in this area run roughly €215 to €645 for the day depending on boat and hours, with another local fleet quoting private hire between about €300 and €600. Shared alternatives are cheap and good: grotto tours sit at roughly €20 to €40 per person, and dolphin trips from here are around €40 per person. Boats and group size
Private boats in the Lagos area take roughly 10 to 18 passengers; across the coast private yachts run about 8 to 19 guests. If the grottoes matter most, note that the boats which can actually enter them are small, around ten people or fewer — sometimes the right answer is a big boat for the day plus a small one for an hour.
Season and weather
Peak is May to October. Lagos sits closer to the Atlantic corner than the resort marinas east of it, so it feels the swell earlier — and swell, not wind, is the constraint on this coast, capable of looking calm from the beach while being unworkable at the cliffs. Mornings are usually the calmer half of the day.
