What the trip actually is
A dolphin trip from Albufeira is a search, not a viewing. The boat leaves Marina de Albufeira — the busiest small-boat base on this coast, where one long-standing fleet runs around ten boats — and works the water offshore looking for common and bottlenose pods. Skippers share sightings by radio, which is why a boat with a fleet behind it often finds animals faster than one working alone.
Sightings are never guaranteed, and the boats say so themselves. Some run a free repeat trip when nothing is seen; that is a per-boat policy rather than a coast-wide rule, and we get it in writing for your booking.
The licence that matters
Dolphin watching requires a cetacean-observation permit on top of the standard Portuguese maritime-tourism registration — a separate authorisation covering how a boat may behave around the animals. Every operator we arrange these trips with is registered under the RNAAT scheme and holds the additional permit. We are not the operator: we match, arrange and confirm, and the skipper makes every call on the water.
Combined or dolphin-only
Two shapes are sold from this marina. Dolphin-only runs are shorter and go straight to the search. The combined trip adds the cliffs and the Benagil caves and comes in at about 2 to 2.5 hours round trip — the better value for most first visits, because the coastline delivers regardless of what the animals do.
What it costs, honestly
Combined dolphin-and-cave trips from Albufeira start from about €35 per person. The wider band for shared cave and coast tours on this coast is roughly €19 to €45 per person, and dolphin-only runs generally sit at the lower end. What we send you is the boat’s own rate for your date and group, with inclusions and the sightings policy written down.
Boats, comfort and children
The shared fleet runs from small fast RIBs up to catamarans carrying up to 45 passengers. That choice changes the day more than the price does: a RIB is thrilling and wet, a catamaran is steady, shaded and far kinder to small children and queasy adults. Life jackets are standard on licensed boats and minimum ages are set per boat.
Season and weather
Boat trips from Albufeira run year-round, though winter frequency drops, with the regional peak May to October. Calm water is what makes a sighting trip work — spotting fins in chop is hard for everyone. Free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead is the market norm, and weather cancellations normally resolve as a reschedule or refund on the boat’s terms, confirmed in writing first.
