The best short boat trip on this coast
Ponta da Piedade is the headland just south of Lagos, and it is the densest piece of coastline in the Algarve: sandstone stacks standing offshore, arches you pass under, tunnels barely wider than the boat, and water that goes an improbable green in the enclosed pools. The circuit is about 1 hour 15 minutes round trip — short enough to slot into an evening, good enough that people do it twice in a week.
Boats leave from Marina de Lagos, where the boat-trip gate sits opposite Amuras Bar; the local fleets include one working from São Roque with twelve vessels, and traditional two-masted sailing boats that have run from here since 1980.
Why boat size decides the trip
This is the one trip on the coast where the boat is the whole decision. The grotto mouths and tunnels only admit small boats, around ten people or fewer. Larger vessels do the same coastline from further out — pleasant, but a different trip. When we send options we say explicitly which of the two each one is, because the photographs used to sell both are frequently identical.
What it costs, honestly
Shared grotto tours run roughly €20 to €40 per person, with one well-reviewed circuit at about €22.50 per person for the 1 hour 15 minute format. Private boats in the Lagos area run roughly €215 to €645 for the day depending on boat and hours, with another fleet quoting private hire between about €300 and €600. For two people the shared trip is usually the right answer and we would rather tell you that than book you a boat you do not need.
Timing, season and swell
Peak season is May to October, and the circuit runs constantly through it. What actually varies is the water: Atlantic swell is the constraint on this coast, and it can look calm from the clifftop while making the tunnels unusable. On swelly days the small boats stay outside the arches, which is when a trip disappoints. Early departures, and the shoulder months either side of peak, give the best odds — and better light on the sandstone.
Who runs it
The boats are run by Portuguese maritime-tourism businesses registered with Turismo de Portugal under the RNAAT scheme. We arrange and confirm the trip; the skipper decides what is safe to enter on the day. Life jackets are standard on licensed boats, and minimum ages are set per boat rather than region-wide — worth checking for small children, since the small boats are open and lively.
