The most scenic approach to a famous cave
Benagil is roughly halfway between Lagos and Albufeira, and the run east from Lagos is about 2 hours round trip on the water. The reason to do it from here rather than from the closer marina at Portimão is what you pass on the way: Ponta da Piedade’s stacks and tunnels first — a circuit that is a trip in its own right at about 1 hour 15 minutes — then the long cliff coast of arches and grottoes east of it.
Boats leave from Marina de Lagos, where the boat-trip gate sits opposite Amuras Bar, with a twelve-vessel fleet working from São Roque and traditional two-masted sailing boats running from here since 1980.
What the rules actually allow
Benagil is regulated water. Harbourmaster edicts in force since 13 August 2024, amended in July 2025, ban swimming or flotation access into the cave, ban disembarking on the cave beach, restrict entry to licensed vessels and cap both the number of boats inside and how long each stays; kayaks and paddleboards may only approach guide-led, at roughly one guide per six craft. A licensed boat typically gets roughly 5 to 10 minutes inside. Fines run from €200 to €216,000.
Those rules followed deaths on this coast. We say that plainly rather than selling a photograph of a beach nobody is allowed to stand on.
What it costs, honestly
The Lagos to Benagil trip is priced at about €40 per person on the shared boats, within a coast-wide band of roughly €19 to €45 per person for shared cave tours. Private boats in the Lagos area run roughly €215 to €645 for the day depending on boat and hours, with another fleet quoting private hire between about €300 and €600. Dolphin trips from the same marina are around €40 per person and combine well with the cave run on a longer private day.
Boats and what gets in
Only small boats — around ten people or fewer — can work the cave mouths. Private boats here take roughly 10 to 18 passengers, which is comfortable for the run and too big for the doorway. That trade-off is the single most useful thing to understand before booking, and we set it out in writing rather than leaving it to the cliff face.
Season, swell and honest expectations
Peak is May to October. Atlantic swell, not wind, decides whether the cave is enterable, and it can look calm from the beach while being dangerous at the mouth. Early departures give the best odds on both swell and queueing.
Trips are run by Portuguese maritime-tourism businesses registered with Turismo de Portugal under RNAAT — we arrange and confirm the day; they run the boat.
