The marina, and what is within reach of it
Marina de Albufeira sits west of the old town, and it is the busiest small-boat base on this stretch of coast — one long-standing fleet here runs around ten boats with more than fifty staff after roughly two decades in the marina. West of the breakwater the coastline turns into the postcard version of the Algarve: ochre cliffs, arches, and coves you can only reach from the water.
That geography is why Albufeira works as a charter base. The Benagil caves are about 2 to 2.5 hours round trip from here, so a cave-and-swim morning is a morning rather than a full day, and you still get the afternoon back.
Be honest about the day you want
Albufeira is the region’s celebration town, and the boat market reflects it: birthday groups, hen and stag parties, big multi-family villas. There is nothing wrong with any of that — but the boat that suits it is not the boat that suits a quiet couple with a picnic. We ask which one you are before we send options, and we say plainly when a boat is a party boat.
What it costs, honestly
Private boats here are quoted per boat and per date rather than published. As a reference for scale, the published fleet lists at the region’s main charter marina run from about €900 for a 47-foot boat to about €3,500 for a 72-footer. Shared trips from Albufeira combining dolphins and the caves start from about €35 per person — for two people that is usually the sensible answer, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a private boat you do not need.
Boat sizes
Private yachts on this coast take roughly 8 to 19 guests, while the shared fleet runs from small RIBs up to catamarans carrying up to 45 passengers. The boats that can actually work the cave mouths are much smaller — around ten people or fewer — so a big boat and a close cave view are two different bookings.
Season and weather
Trips from Albufeira run year-round, with winter frequency dropping and cave access depending on that week’s swell; the regional peak is May to October. Atlantic swell is the constraint that matters — it can look calm from the beach and be dangerous at the cliffs.
Who runs the boat
Fulfilment is by Portuguese maritime-tourism businesses registered with Turismo de Portugal under RNAAT; one multi-marina business also works from Vilamoura, Lagos and Portimão, so your day can often start from whichever marina is closest. We arrange and confirm; the skipper runs the boat. Free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead is the norm, and weather cancellations resolve as a reschedule or refund on the boat’s terms, in writing first.
