Faro is a boat town more than most visitors notice
Almost everyone lands here and drives away. The people who stay a night find that the marina sits at the edge of the old walled town and opens straight into the Ria Formosa Natural Park — the gateway to the whole lagoon system. Within a few minutes of leaving the pontoon you are among sandbars, channel markers and wading birds, with the airport runway on one side and nothing but water on the other.
The signature run from here is the barrier island opposite the city: a long empty beach on the Atlantic side, calm water on the lagoon side, and a catamaran service that has been running since 1987, with its own restaurant on the island. Taking a boat privately means you choose how long to stay and which sandbanks to add on the way back.
What a private day from Faro looks like
Trips out of the lagoon bases are sold in formats from about an hour up to a full day. In practice most groups from Faro take a half day: out through the channel, one island beach with real time on it, a second shallow stop for swimming, and back before the afternoon wind gets up. Longer days add lunch ashore on one of the inhabited islands.

Private lagoon charters start around €135 for a three-stop islands charter. Shared alternatives from the same marina run roughly €25 to €55 per person, and a sunset trip sits around €30 per person. Season, weather and the honest version
The regional peak is May to October, but the lagoon runs far outside it — it is sheltered water that stays workable when the open coast does not, and its birdlife is at its best from October to March. A March morning here with a skipper who knows the roosts is a genuinely better trip than a July afternoon in traffic.

Fulfilment is by Portuguese maritime-tourism businesses registered with Turismo de Portugal under the RNAAT scheme — we arrange and confirm the day, they run it. Life jackets are carried as standard on licensed boats, and minimum ages vary by boat rather than by region, so we check that for your group rather than guessing.
