The most-walked levada on the island, and its two catches
25 Fontes is the walk almost everyone has seen a photograph of: a levada path through laurel forest at Rabaçal ending in a basin fed by a scatter of springs running off the rock face. It is deservedly popular. It also comes with two pieces of admin that catch people out, and both are the reason a guided version sells so well — the ticket and the road.
Tickets, slots and the 2026 rules
Since January 2026 the PR network is fee-and-booking-gated through the regional portal: €4.50 per person per route, under-12s free, residents exempt, 30-minute arrival slots and fines for anyone walking without a ticket. Paid guiding requires a registered company or guide under the same regime, which the island is enforcing. It is no accident that “tickets” and “transfer” now sit right alongside “hike” and “map” in what people search about this trail — those are the two questions a guided day answers.
Getting there, which is the other half
Rabaçal is roughly 50 to 60 minutes from Funchal by road, and the last stretch down to the trailhead is access-restricted: on foot or by shuttle. A guided walk with hotel pickup removes both the drive and the improvised parking, and puts a vehicle where you need it at the end.
Prices
Group guided walks run about €47 to €52 per person including hotel pickup, with private guided walks quoted per party. The best-documented walking company on the island prices 25 Fontes inside that band and lists guides working in English, Spanish, French, German, Ukrainian and Russian; three further licensed mountain and hiking guide businesses run the same trail.
Difficulty, weather and closures
This is a moderate walk, not a summit day, but it is longer than the photographs suggest once the descent and the climb back out are counted, and the levada path narrows in places. Be straight with us about fitness and about anyone in the group who is uneasy with exposure — the guide can pace it, shorten it or move you to a gentler levada. Walking here runs year-round, though mountain trails close after storms and “is the hike closed” is a standard question for a reason. Rabaçal sits inland on the wetter side of the weather divide: the north and the highlands take considerably more rain than the sheltered south coast, especially October to March.
Who guides, and what we do
Fulfilment is by licensed local guides working for registered companies: Portuguese tourist-activity companies hold an RNAAT registration and display it, and Madeira has been enforcing it against unregistered guides — several of the walking companies we work with publish their numbers openly. We plan the day, confirm the guide, the trail ticket and the pickup directly with them, and stay your single contact. Route and safety decisions on the day are the guide’s. Free cancellation up to about 24 hours ahead is the local norm, and a closure or a weather call normally becomes a different walk rather than a lost day.
