Fanal is the reason, and the reason it is unpredictable
The western half of Madeira Island is the green one: laurel forest, terraced valleys dropping to the sea, and the Fanal plateau where old trees stand in drifting cloud. Fanal is the hook the whole west day hangs on — it is what the searches for this tour are actually asking for — and it is entirely weather-dependent. Mist makes it; clear sun makes it ordinary. Nobody can book you the mist, which is precisely why the person driving should be someone who watches this island’s weather every morning.
What the day looks like
A west circuit typically threads the Fanal plateau and the laurel forest, the north-west coast around Porto Moniz, and the terraced south-west around Calheta and Ponta do Sol, with mountain viewpoints in between. Jeep versions get closer to the forest tracks, and “west jeep tour” is one of the most common ways people search for this day at all. Minibus and car tours cover the same ground more comfortably on tarmac; three established island-tour companies and two jeep specialists work these routes.

Full-day tours run roughly €45 to €90 per person. The best-documented jeep company on the island charges about €89.86 per person for a full day and displays its RNAAT registration on its own site. Weather, seasons and honest expectations
This is the wet side. The south coast — Funchal, Calheta, Ponta do Sol — is the sheltered, sunnier part of the island, while the north and the highlands are considerably wetter, especially October to March. Occasional hot easterly winds and rare dust days are the other local quirks. The island works year-round, so the question is rarely whether a west tour can run, only whether today is the day for it. Guides routinely swap east and west by the morning forecast, which is the main practical advantage of a guided day over a hire car.

Fulfilment is by licensed local businesses. Portuguese tourist-activity companies must hold an RNAAT registration and display it, the regional tourism board maintains a public directory, and Madeira has been enforcing this against unregistered guides — several of the jeep and tour companies we work with publish their registration numbers openly.
