Across the island, and why this one is worth booking
Calheta sits on the south-west coast, and the airport is at the eastern end of the island — so this is the long one. Third-party route measurements put it at 52 km and about 49 to 50 minutes, most of it on the fast road along the sheltered south side. Demand for this route reflects that: people search it as a transfer and a taxi question rather than as a bus question, because the distance makes a private car the sensible answer.
The arrival is also where local knowledge pays. The south-west coast is terraced, steep and full of villa roads that maps handle optimistically, and a driver who works this side of the island finds the gate first time.
Per-vehicle pricing
Published private rates for this route run about €45 to €59 across the smaller vehicle tiers. You buy the vehicle rather than the seat, and the tiers are sedan for 1 to 3 passengers, van for 4 to 6 and minibus for 7 to 8, with larger minibuses available for bigger groups. On a run this long, that pricing basis is what makes a family transfer competitive with anything else — and luggage for a week routinely moves a group up a tier, which is better decided now than at the kerb.
Child seats, fitted before you land
Baby and child seats are free on request from the transfer companies here. They are fitted before your flight arrives, so ages and weights need to come with the booking rather than on the day.
Delays and the return leg
Inbound flights are tracked — send your flight number with the booking so the company is watching it rather than waiting on a fixed time. Booking both legs together is normally the better price, and return pickups are timed off your departure with a margin for the drive rather than a guess. Free cancellation up to about 24 hours ahead is the local norm.
Licensed local companies
The transfers we arrange are run by licensed local companies — two established transfer and chauffeur businesses cover the island — and Portuguese tourist-activity companies hold an RNAAT registration, which Madeira has been actively enforcing. We do not own vehicles or employ drivers. We take your flight details to a licensed company, confirm the booking directly with them, and stay reachable if anything changes.
Once you are on this coast
Calheta is a working harbour as well as a resort: Porto de Recreio da Calheta is home to the island’s whale boats and its entire big-game fleet. See the fishing charter from Calheta, the yacht charter from Calheta and the whale- and dolphin-watching charter. Inland, the guided 25 Fontes walk and the west Madeira island tour are both close. A private chef covers the evening. Everything on the island sits on the Madeira destination page, and transfers elsewhere on the airport transfers page.
Request availability with your flight number, party size and the ages of any children — we come back with a real quote from a licensed driver, and nothing is booked until you confirm.
