The island rewards a 4x4 more than most places do
Madeira Island is small and almost entirely vertical. The good parts — the Fanal plateau, the forest tracks, the high mountain roads, the viewpoints above the cloud — sit at the end of surfaces a rental hatchback should not be on, and often at the end of a drive most visitors would rather not do themselves after a week of switchbacks. West takes in the Fanal laurel forest and the north-west coast, and it is the version most associated with the island’s signature photographs. Full-day jeep tours run roughly €45 to €90 per person. The company with the most transparent pricing charges about €89.86 per person for a full day of around eight hours and displays its RNAAT registration on its own site. Private hire of a whole jeep is quoted per group and per date rather than published, and we bring back the operator’s own figure with the inclusions spelled out — pickup point, lunch and whether the guide is also the driver are the three details worth checking every time.
Weather and the route swap
The south coast is the sheltered, sunnier side of the island; the north and the highlands are wetter, especially October to March, and above the ridges there is often a cloud layer that early starts get above. Good drivers flip east for west by the forecast rather than committing on a booking form three weeks earlier. The island runs year-round, free cancellation up to about 24 hours ahead is the norm, and a genuine weather call usually resolves as a reschedule.
