The west-coast marina, and how charter really works here
Porto de Recreio da Calheta is Madeira Island’s second nautical base: the Calheta whale boats, the whole big-game fishing fleet and a charter boat or two work out of it. It is the harbour for anyone whose week is based on the south-west coast rather than in the capital.
Now the honest part. No Calheta-based yacht-charter business with its own site was found when we researched this market — Calheta charter supply reaches travellers through Funchal brokerages and marketplaces that list boats lying here, and the main island brokerage openly lists boats at Machico and Calheta alongside its Funchal berths. So a “Calheta yacht charter” is a real thing to book, but it is booked through people based elsewhere, and the first question worth asking is where the boat actually is on your date. We ask it for you.
Head-term demand here is thin — searches around Calheta boats barely extend past a single phrase — which is another way of saying this page exists for people already staying on this coast rather than for people shopping the island at large.
What it costs
The same basis as everywhere else on the island: small boats and bareboat-style listings from about €250 a day, crewed boats quoted per boat and per date because no broker here publishes a crewed rate. We would rather explain the pattern than invent a range.
Season and weather
The island runs year-round and this is the sheltered south coast, with sea temperatures of roughly 18 to 24 °C across the calendar. Atlantic swell is what cancels boats, and it closes small ones first. Free cancellation up to about 24 hours ahead is the norm, with weather calls resolving as a reschedule or refund on the boat’s terms.
Who runs the boat
Fulfilment is by licensed Portuguese businesses holding an RNAAT tourist-activity registration, which Madeira enforces. We arrange and confirm; the skipper runs the boat.
More from this marina: the fishing charter from Calheta and the whale- and dolphin-watching charter. Arrivals are on the Madeira Airport to Calheta transfer page, everything on the island on the Madeira destination page, and boats elsewhere on the boat charters page.
Request availability with your dates and group size — we come back with what is genuinely lying at this marina, and nothing is booked until you confirm.
