Why people charter from here
Vilamoura is the easiest place in the region to start a boat day: you park, walk the pontoon and step aboard. Marina de Vilamoura is the charter base of the central Algarve, with charter offices on the marina itself and at least five dedicated charter firms working from it. It is one of the largest marinas in the country — the berth count quoted online is not verified on a primary source, so we will not pretend to a precise figure.
The coast immediately west of the marina is the golden-cliff stretch: ochre walls, small coves and swimming stops the shared excursion boats pass by. Most groups head that way with the morning light and turn back before the afternoon breeze fills in.
Blocks, not itineraries
Charters here are sold in blocks, from about 2 hours up to 10 hours, and the block you buy decides how much coast you actually see. Half-day blocks cover the cliffs toward Albufeira comfortably. Benagil is a different proposition: it sits well west and only appears on charters of 5 hours or more, sold as a dedicated 4 to 5 hour private itinerary. If the caves matter most to you, we would rather move you to a marina closer to them than sell you the long version.
What it costs, honestly
Fleet lists run from about €900 for a 47-foot boat taking up to 10 passengers to about €3,500 for a 72-foot yacht, with a 19-passenger catamaran around €1,950. Treat the low figure as an entry point rather than a half-day rate — it moves with boat, block length and season. Several firms here publish no rate card at all and quote per boat, per date, which is normal in this market and the reason a single number online is usually wrong.
Boat size and group size
Local fleets run six yachts taking 10 to 16 passengers, plus a 58-foot motor yacht rated for up to 12 guests; across the coast, private yachts take roughly 8 to 19 guests. The useful question is not the maximum but the shade, the swim platform and whether a nervous grandparent has somewhere to sit inside.
Season and weather
Peak runs May to October, and July and August are both the best conditions and the busiest water. The real constraint on the western run is Atlantic swell rather than wind: it can look calm from the beach and be unworkable at the cliffs. Skippers who say no on those mornings are the ones worth booking.
