The short version
Bolzano sits at the mouth of the valley system, and Val Gardena is a short climb from it. Our estimate for the run is roughly 40 km and about 45 to 55 minutes — and that is an estimate from the route rather than a published operator time, so read it as an approximation and expect us to confirm a realistic figure with the driver for your date. Winter conditions on the valley road move it either way.
The catch is not the drive, it is the flight schedule. Bolzano is a small airport, and most visitors to this valley arrive at Innsbruck, Venice, Verona, Milan or Munich instead. If Bolzano works for you, it is the easiest arrival in the destination by a clear margin.
Where you are actually going
Val Gardena is three villages — Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva — spread along one valley floor with German, Italian and Ladin all in daily use. Drop-off matters more than the distance suggests: chalet and apartment addresses climb the valley sides, and the difference between the right gate and the wrong one at night with children and ski bags is the whole point of booking a car rather than improvising.
