Kayaking tour in Bohinj

A flat green lake with mountains standing straight out of it, and a boat quiet enough to hear them.

A quieter lake, from the water

Bohinj is the bigger and emptier of the two famous lakes here, and a kayak is the best way to use that. The shoreline road only touches part of it; from the water you get the whole amphitheatre of mountains, the reed edges, and the inflow at the far end where the valley narrows. It is flat water, so this is a paddle rather than a battle — the effort is in the distance, not the conditions.

Departures are on the Ribčev Laz lakefront, where the two established local teams sit almost next door to each other, a short walk from the bus stop and the car parks.

Guided, or on your own

Search behaviour here is honest about itself: hire intent is at least as strong as tour intent. Both work, and we arrange both. A guided trip suits mixed-ability groups, first-time paddlers, families who want someone else keeping count, and anyone who wants the lake and its valley explained as they go. Straight hire suits confident paddlers with a calm forecast and a morning to spend.

Neither needs experience. A kayak on flat water is one of the few outdoor activities here that a complete beginner can do well within ten minutes.

Season, prices and weather

The lakefront kayak season opens on 1 March, which is a month or more before most visitors think the region is open, and guided trips cluster between April and October. Kayak lessons start from about 43 EUR and guided kayaking from about 68 EUR per person — we confirm what is included, and for how long, with the team before you commit.

Mountain weather still applies to flat water. Afternoon thunderstorms are normal here in summer, so morning sessions are the reliable ones, and trips that are cancelled for weather are rebooked or refunded.

Tell us your dates, the number paddling and whether you want a guide or just the boats, and we will come back with options and a real price. See the Julian Alps overview for the rest of the lake, or request availability.

Good to know

Should we take a guided tour or just hire a kayak?
Most people searching for this end up hiring, and on a calm morning on a lake this size that is a perfectly good plan. A guided trip earns its price when you want the lake explained, when the group has mixed confidence, or when you would rather someone else watched the weather. We can arrange either.
When does the season start?
Earlier than people expect — the lakefront kayak season opens on 1 March, though guided trips concentrate from April to October. March and April mornings are cold and beautiful and almost empty.
Can you swim in Lake Bohinj?
It is the question the search engines suggest most often, and we are not going to answer it with something we have not verified. Our research for this destination did not produce a sourced rule on swimming and bathing here, so ask the lakefront team on the day, or ask us and we will get you the current answer in writing rather than a guess.

Tell us the dates and the kind of day you have in mind. A real person checks availability directly with the local skipper, guide, chef or driver and replies with honest options and prices. Nothing is booked until you confirm.
