The hop that is worth taking as a trip
Two old ports, five miles of limestone between them, and most of the good stuff in the middle. Monopoli to the Polignano caves is roughly 5 nautical miles along the coast, which shared boats run in about 2 hours round trip. One way at cruising speed is somewhere around 30 to 40 minutes — an approximation from the distance rather than a published schedule, but the right order of magnitude if you are planning lunch at the far end.
Boats leave from Porto di Monopoli, the old port beside the walled town, which makes this one of the few boat departures you can walk to from breakfast.
What you actually see
The destination is the cave-riddled cliff under Polignano a Mare: Grotta Palazzese below the restaurant everyone has seen, plus Grotta Ardito, Grotta delle Rondinelle and Grotta degli Innamorati. Whether you get inside them depends entirely on the boat and the sea. The hulls that can physically enter take up to 10 people; larger vessels work the same coast from outside, which is a good trip and a different one. We say which is which when we send options, because the photography used to sell both is usually identical.
Prices, honestly labelled
Shared gozzo trips on this route are listed at roughly 47 to 64 US dollars per person on the booking sites — that is a marketplace listing rather than an operator quote, so treat it as an indication. At the Polignano end, taking a small boat privately runs around 250 to 300 EUR for 1.5 hours, with longer blocks listed from about 500 EUR for 3 hours. Chartering a yacht from Monopoli is quoted per boat and per date, with no published rate card at all.
Weather is the whole planning problem
Cave entries need calm water. Northerly and north-westerly winds raise chop along this eastern coast, and same-day go or no-go decisions are the norm, with mornings usually the calmest part of the day. The boat season runs March to October against a May-to-October visitor season, and the sea is warmest July into September. There is also one day a year when the water at Polignano closes to regular tours for a cliff-diving event, on a date that moves.
