Salento’s best stretch of coast, from the water
Otranto sits at the eastern edge of Italy with a harbour under its old walls, and the coast running south from it is the reason to be here with a boat. Local boats work the water between Torre dell’Orso and Santa Cesarea and Castro, a run of white cliffs, cave mouths and small coves that changes every few minutes. Departures are from Via del Porto, in the town harbour itself — walkable from breakfast, which matters more than it sounds in August.
One quiet signal about this market: people searching for boat trips in Otranto routinely search for individual boats by name rather than for the category. That is what an established local market looks like — small businesses with reputations, rather than listings.
Two different ways to do it
The first is licence-free. Italian law lets you take a small engine out without a boat licence within 6 nautical miles of shore, and Otranto has rentals built around exactly that — ID and a briefing, then the day is yours. A full day of about 9 hours starts from roughly 240 EUR plus fuel, which split between four or five people is among the better-value days on this coast.
The second is skippered, and it is the right answer more often than people expect. A skippered charter requires a skipper holding the patente nautica on a boat registered for charter use. You get someone who knows which cove is empty at eleven, which cave the swell is sitting in, and when to turn around. If nobody in your group has driven a boat, or the forecast is unsettled, this is not a close call.
Wind, season and honest expectations
The boat season runs March to October inside a May-to-October visitor season with the crowds June to August; the sea is at its warmest July into September. This is an exposed coast: northerly and north-westerly winds raise chop along the eastern side of the heel, and same-day go or no-go decisions are normal. Mornings are usually calmest, with the thermal breeze building through the afternoon. If the eastern side is unusable, the trick Salento skippers use further south is simply to change sea — at Leuca the cave circuits run on both the eastern and the western coasts and the calmer side is chosen on the morning.
Terms, safety and who runs it
Rentals here are stricter than tours on cancellation: a 48-hour cut-off, then the full charge, against the 24-hour free-cancellation norm on shared trips. Bad weather normally means a reschedule or a full refund, though the terms are per boat rather than regional — we confirm yours in writing first. Boats carry life jackets to their safety rules and children are broadly welcome, with minimum ages set per boat.
