Faro Airport to Tavira transfer

East instead of west — half an hour along the lagoon to the quieter Algarve, with the bags already in the car.

The eastern Algarve is a different holiday

Turning east out of the airport takes you toward the Ria Formosa lagoon, saltpans, sandbar islands and a town centre that still behaves like a town. The drive to Tavira is about 40 km on the A22, priced by a published airport guide at a fixed €35 for a car carrying up to four passengers, and normally taking 30 to 40 minutes. That is an indication rather than a quote — the source is an airport information site rather than a driver — so we confirm the real fare, tolls included, with a licensed local company for your dates.

Nothing about this run is difficult. It is simply more pleasant to arrive without a hire-car counter queue, especially if the plan for the week is boats, beaches reached by ferry and dinners you can walk to.

Train, bus or a booked car

Tavira has a station and a bus service, and for a couple travelling light they are genuinely worth considering — we would rather say so than pretend a private car is the only sensible answer. The trade-off is the same one every time: connections at the airport end, waiting, and carrying your own luggage. Once you are three or more people, or arriving after dark with children, the per-vehicle price of a car usually wins on both cost and sanity.

What the car costs

Pricing is per vehicle, not per seat: the published bands across the main routes run from around €27 to €65 for up to four passengers, and about €35 to €76 for eight-seaters. As with every figure sourced from that guide, we treat it as a planning range and then get you a real quote. Vehicle size follows the group: cars take three or four passengers, minivans eight, minibuses up to sixteen.

Child seats

The transfer companies covering the eastern Algarve supply baby and child seats free, in age bands, and Portuguese law requires proper restraints for younger children. They are fitted in advance, which means ages and weights need to arrive with your request rather than on the day.

Licensed companies, not our cars

Transfers are run by companies on Portugal’s RNAVT travel-agency register. We arrange and confirm the booking directly with them and stay your contact if the flight time changes; the vehicle, driver and insurance are theirs.

Delays and cancellations

Inbound flights are tracked, so a delay does not strand you. Terms differ by company and we will tell you which apply before you book: one allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup, another requires 48 hours and charges half the fare for a no-show.

What people do from Tavira

This is lagoon country, so the days that suit it are boat days on sheltered water: a private boat charter from Tavira, the Ria Formosa islands boat tour or a sunset boat charter in Ria Formosa. An inland afternoon is covered by the private Algarve wine tour. The full regional picture is on the Algarve destination page, and transfers in our other regions on the airport transfers page.

Request availability with your flight number, the address in Tavira and the ages of any children — we come back with a real quote from a licensed driver, and nothing is booked until you say so.

Good to know

How long is the drive from Faro Airport to Tavira?
Typically thirty to forty minutes on the A22, across roughly forty kilometres. It is a straightforward run, and the only real variable is the summer changeover traffic on Saturday afternoons.
There is a train to Tavira — should we use it?
For one or two people travelling light, it is a perfectly good option and cheaper; the regional line serves the town. What it costs you is getting from the terminal to the station, the wait, and hauling luggage at both ends — which is why families and late arrivals still tend to book a car.
Is the transfer priced per person?
No, per vehicle — so the more of you there are, the better it compares with individual train or bus fares. Luggage and child seats usually settle the argument.
Can the driver take us to the old town or Quatro Águas?
Yes. Give us the exact address with your request, including whether you are in the old town, out toward Quatro Águas, or in one of the villa areas outside Tavira — it affects the quote and how the driver plans the drop-off.
Do they carry child seats?
Yes, free, in age bands, fitted before your flight lands. Send ages and weights with the booking request rather than at the kerb.
