Where you leave from
Pinhão has two rabelo piers: Cais A on Travessa da Marginal, with free parking about a minute away, and Rua da Praia. Both are a short walk from the railway station and from Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta de la Rosa, which is why a tasting-then-boat afternoon works here better than anywhere else in the valley.
The boats, and who runs them
The classic is the rabelo — the flat-bottomed barrel boat, now rebuilt for passengers. The bigger ones carry up to 60 passengers, and some are adapted for reduced mobility. For a private day you are more likely to be on a smaller vintage or wooden boat carrying about 6 to 12 people; one private rabelo product takes up to 10 people and includes a swim and picnic stop.
Every trip is run by a licensed local boat company, not by us. Around Pinhão that means outfits like Companhia Turística do Douro, running rabelo cruises here since 1993, Pipadouro’s vintage boats, Magnífico Douro, Ânima Durius with wooden yacht charters of one to four hours, and Feel Douro. River tourism on this stretch is regulated: the Douro is managed as the Via Navegável do Douro by APDL, and tourist vessels operate under Regulation 647/2019. We check that the boat you are put on belongs to a company operating inside that regime.
Run times and what a charter costs
The two standard legs from Pinhão are Romaneira, about 50 minutes there and back, and Tua, about 1 hour 50. Shared seats on those runs start from around 15 EUR and 30 EUR per person, which is the honest benchmark to measure a charter against.
Private charter prices are quote-on-request across every operator here — none of them publish a rate card, and we will not invent one. As a planning bracket only, expect somewhere in the region of 300 to 800 EUR for the boat for one to two hours, moving with the boat, the hour and the season. The quote we send you is the skipper’s own number, with what it includes — drinks, ice, a picnic stop, the length of the run — written out rather than implied.
Kids, heat and the right hour
Boats here carry life jackets to their vessel certification and the rabelo companies take children; tell us ages and we will match you to a boat with shade and somewhere to sit properly. Shade matters more than people expect: August highs in the valley can reach 40 C, and the water reflects all of it. In high summer the good hours are early morning and the last two before sunset. Out of season the river keeps working — closed rabelos sail year-round now — and winter here is mild, wetter and often misty over the water.
If the day cannot run
Weather cancellations on the river are normally rebooked or refunded, and a closed boat removes most of the risk in the first place. We send you the operator’s actual cancellation terms with the quote, and if the skipper calls it off we help you move the day rather than argue about it.
