Why start from Pinhão rather than Porto
Because the driving stops being the day. From Pinhão you are already inside the best of the valley: two well-known estates are a walk from the pier and the railway station, and the steeper ones are a short climb into the terraces rather than a two-hour commitment. That is the whole argument for staying up here a night instead of doing the round trip from the coast, where the same day involves about 2 hours of road in each direction.
The estates within reach
In the town itself, Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta de la Rosa give you the two faces of the Douro — a big port house with a museum and vineyard walks, and a family winery with a restaurant and rooms. Up on the slopes above Pinhão sit Sandeman’s Quinta do Seixo and Fonseca’s Quinta do Panascal at Valença do Douro, with Quinta Nova at Covas do Douro and Quinta do Crasto over at Gouvinhas. Downriver at Folgosa, Quinta do Tedo is organic and sits at the confluence where the Tedo meets the Douro, with a bistro worth the detour. West toward Régua, Quinta do Vallado and Quinta da Pacheca are 25 to 30 minutes down the N222.

Adding the river
Pinhão has two rabelo piers — Cais A on Travessa da Marginal, with parking about a minute away, and Rua da Praia — so the boat is never more than a short walk from lunch. The standard shared runs are about 50 minutes upstream to Romaneira or about 1 hour 50 to Tua, from around 15 EUR and 30 EUR per person respectively. Season and weather, straight
May to October is the core season. August is beautiful and brutally hot — the valley can hit 40 C — so tastings belong in the morning or the last hours of light. Harvest runs roughly 10 September to 5 October with the peak in the second half of September, at a much kinder 28 to 33 C with cool evenings. Out of season the river still works: closed rabelos sail year-round now, and winter here is mild, wet and misty rather than shut.
