Two lakes, one day, in the right order
Bled and Bohinj get bundled together for a good reason: they are about 30 minutes apart on the valley road and they are completely different places. Bled is the picture — island, church, castle on a cliff, a shoreline path that fills up by late morning. Bohinj is the bigger, quieter, wilder one, sitting in a horseshoe of mountains with a fraction of the crowd.
Done well, the day goes to Bled first and Bohinj second. That way you see the famous lake before the coaches arrive and end the afternoon somewhere you can actually hear the water. The stop people specifically ask for is the Savica waterfall above Bohinj — it is a short, steep set of steps and it fits some itineraries and not others, which we settle when the plan is drawn rather than promising it here.
Where the day starts
Ljubljana is the dominant starting point for this trip and the standard full-day loop from the city, taking in both lakes and a third town, runs 08:00 to 18:30. That is a long day, and it is the honest cost of basing yourself in the capital.
Starting from a hotel in the mountains changes the arithmetic completely. Ljubljana Airport to Bled is roughly 35 to 40 minutes, so a great many people arrive, sleep in Bled or Bohinj, and do this day with two extra hours in it. If your dates allow that, take it.
Private or shared
Shared day tours from Ljubljana are efficient and good value: a full-day Bled and Bohinj tour with a third stop is listed at about 121 EUR per person. They run to a fixed clock, which is fine unless your group includes small children, a slow walker or someone who wants an hour at the water rather than twenty minutes.

Season and weather
There is no closed season for this day, but there are two very different versions of it. Summer is green, warm and busy. Late autumn and winter are quiet and often beautiful, with the caveat that mountain roads and lake boats run to their own schedules and a wet day at two lakes is a wet day. Tours cancelled for weather are rebooked or refunded in this market and free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead is the general pattern.
