A small market, honestly described

Sunset boats at Horta are a handful of products rather than an industry, and we would rather say that than dress it up. What exists is real: a day-sailing outfit listing sunset trips with dolphin sightings, a Horta Marina diving and boat business listing sunset charter cruises, and a private sunset sailboat trip carried on a regional guide. That is enough to plan a good evening around, and few enough boats that a summer weekend needs arranging ahead rather than on the day.

Why the channel is the right water for it

Pico and Faial face each other across about 8 km, so an evening sail out of Horta has the mountain on one side and the Faial coast on the other for the whole trip. The harbour itself is a transatlantic yacht stopover with a painted quay and a bar full of people who arrived under sail — leaving from it in the evening is half the appeal.

What it costs

Nobody at Horta publishes a sunset rate card, so we will not invent one. The nearest honest anchor is the day-charter market, where a marketplace lists the average private day out of Horta at around €1,100 a day and weekly bareboat yachts at roughly €2,400 to €3,400. An evening block is shorter and prices below that; what we send you is the boat’s own quote for your date, with inclusions written down.

Season, dolphins and the weather call

The destination season runs May to September, and midsummer evenings are the long ones. Atlantic spotted dolphins arrive in late June and stay through the season, so a sighting on an evening sail is plausible rather than promised. Every boat holds the regional maritime-tourism operator licence, and every skipper works to the same limit: sea state rather than rain decides whether an evening sails, and swell cancellations happen in summer too, with May to October holding the calmest windows. When a boat stands down, free rebooking or a full refund is the norm, on terms set by the business and confirmed in writing first.
