The run across the island
João Paulo II Airport sits on the western edge of Ponta Delgada, and Furnas is most of the way across the island to the east. The drive takes about 40 to 50 minutes — the same road as the 45-minute run between the town and the valley. It is a straightforward journey in daylight and a less appealing one at the end of a long flight in the rain, which is most of the argument for booking a car in advance.
What it costs, and how it is priced
A local transfer company publishes €50 for one to four passengers and €70 for five to eight on this route, while quotes through the booking sites start around €81. The important detail is that this is a per-vehicle price, not a per-person one — for four people it is usually the cheapest way to get there without renting, and for one traveller it rarely is.
Child seats are generally available on request from the transfer companies here, though we confirm that individually rather than assume it, so send ages with your booking.
The honest alternative
If your plan is to see the whole island, hire a car. São Miguel rewards independence, the roads are good, and a transfer in each direction plus taxis for the days in between will cost more than a week’s rental. Where a transfer wins is the specific case this page is about: a stay in Furnas itself, where the walking, the thermal bathing, the garden and the food are all within the valley, and a car spends the week parked.
